Abstract
Several methods such as hydrothermal, co-precipitation, solution combustion, and pulsed laser deposition have been reported for the synthesis of zinc oxysulfide (ZnOxS1-x). The photocatalytic activity of ZnOxS1-x for the inactivation of organic pollutants and bacteria are well-known. This paper is the first ever study on novel application of ZnOxS1-x as an instant and excellent adsorbent for carcinogenic arsenic (As) species present in water. For this, ZnOxS1-x nanomaterial has been synthesized using a facile and economical chemical precipitation method. As per WHO guidelines, the maximum permissible concentration of As in potable water is 10 mu g/L. However, ZnOxS1-x nanomaterial efficiently adsorb As within this concentration in about a minute without deteriorating the quality of water. The adsorption efficiency of ZnOxS1-x nanomaterial has been estimated as a function of pH, adsorbent dose, time and concentration of As. Interestingly, the adsorption efficiency was >99% at each pH with highest (99.9%) in 6-8 pH range. The adsorption capacity of ZnOxS1-x was calculated to be 299.4 mg/g, which is superior to several reported adsorbents. An electrostatic interaction was investigated between positively charged ZnOxS1-x and negatively charged oxyanionic As species. The synthesis and adsorption process were also augmented by several spectral and microscopic techniques.
