Abstract

A quick and rapid method has been developed for Organic Carbon (OC), Black Carbon (BC) and Silica by gravimetry, followed by lithium tetra borate fusion for major and minor cations by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS) and by Graphite Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS) in suspended particulate matter collected by High Volume Sampler (HVS) on cellulose filters. The remaining residue after determination of OC and BC and silica was fused with two times of lithium tetra borate and dissolved in nitric acid and cations like sodium, potassium, calcium, lead, iron zinc, magnesium were determined by FAAS and aluminium, strontium, copper, nickel, cadmium, manganese, cobalt, and chromium have been determined by GFAAS. Several SPM deposit cellulose filters samples have been analyzed using the proposed method. The standard deviation of the measurements has been calculated by analyzing five replicates of each sample and was found to be less than 1.6% by the proposed method.
