Abstract

Aniline has been copolymerized in the presence of s ubstituted anilines as comonomers to prepare conduc ting copolymers of poly(aniline-co-alkylaniline) type, v ia the chemical oxidative polymerization route. The ir thermal stabilities and conductivities are slightly less than pure poly aniline but processabilities have been improved sig nificantly. These copolymers exhibit improved solubility in organic s olvents like 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethyl sulpohxide (DMSO), and dimethyl formamide (DMF). Conduction me chanism has been found to be 3-D VRH in case of pur e HCl- doped polyaniline and 1-D VRH for copolymers. Coati ng of these polymers on insulating surfaces can be used for ESD protection and corrosion prevention of iron and mil d steel under hostile conditions.
