Abstract

Nanocrystalline CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) dielectric ceramics were prepared by a low-cost sol–gel technique. Sols were aged for 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours at constant humidity. The samples were calcined at 700 C and sintered at 1025 C. XRD patterns revealed the formation of cubic perovskite CaCu3Ti4O12, with traces of CuO. HRTEM images showed interfacial spacing of 0.22 nm and 0.18 nm; corresponding to (222) and (400) planes of the body-centered cubic perovskite structure, respectively. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns indicated the presence of polycrystalline CCTO. SEM micrograph revealed that the grains are compacted and having a plate-like structure. Frequency and temperature dependence of dielectric constant and losses were also studied. I–V characteristics changed from nonlinear to linear for the sol aged for 120 hours. EDX spectra showed an increase in oxygen content with increase in sol ageing time. The presence of CuO and oxygen ion may be the cause of increased dielectric constant for samples aged for longer time.
